You are missing the binary distribution for GTK+ provided by Simon
Urbanek at
http://r.research.att.com/
In particular you require the file
http://r.research.att.com/libs/GTK_2.18.5-X11.pkg
located under the heading Other binaries. Simon has generously put
together this bundle so R users on Mac OS X can have a common version of
GTK+.
Note: The tip-off to the underlying issue was the error message
Library not loaded:
/Library/Frameworks/GTK+.framework/Versions/2.18.X11/Resources/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.0.dylib
