what do you get when you run:
.Machine[["sizeof.pointer"]]
?
I'm really surprised by the "i486-pc-linux-gnu" bit from your
sessionInfo()... I'd expect something like x86_64, if you were running
a 64 bit version of R.
Given that you're running Ubuntu, you're expected to follow the steps
as described by the page below:
