If this is a work computer that you are not a superuser on, I don't
think you will have access to the /var directory. Probably your best bet
is to try to work with the R you have installed in your /home directory.

Happy holidays,

Jim

I tried to install precompiled binaries to a linux readhat 7.3. At
installation, I got this error message (below)

[rlv10 at lionxl rnew]$ rpm -i R-1.7.1-1.i386.rpm

error: cannot get exclusive lock on /var/lib/rpm/Packages

error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - Operation not permitted
(1)

error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

[rlv10 at lionxl rnew]$

I would appreciate suggestions on how to avoid this error message.

Roger
