[Bioc-devel] Question on copyright in Bioc vignette

Hi Fabricio,

Creative Commons has detailed instructions on how to apply the licenses:
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/

I'd rather add a section at the beginning of the document, not at
the bottom. For instance, in Rnw documents, right after \tableofcontents I
add

\section*{License and copyright}\label{license}
This work is Copyright, \copyright, [year] [Name], and is licensed under a \textbf{Creative Commons
} Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License:
\Burl{http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/}.

\centerline \ccbysa

[Replace the license with the appropriate license and link]

Before all of that, though, you probably want to think carefully about the
license:
https://creativecommons.org/faq/#what-things-should-i-think-about-before-i-apply-a-creative-commons-license

(and this flowchart,
http://creativecommons.org.au/content/licensing-flowchart.pdf, I find very helpful).

Best,

R.

P.S. I am dealing with the "how do I mention a CC-BY
license". Specifically, I am not addressing the "Does anyone know if
including the same figure in the vignette and in the paper would result in
copyright issues with the journal?". I am not a lawyer, and I've never seen
this, but I can imagine a journal could ask you to produce a figure
*specifically* for the paper, and then ask you to sign a copyright transfer
of the figure, and the rest of the paper, to the journal. I am not sure if
having the figure in the vignette under the CC license would help
here. Though this scenario, I guess, would be unlikely if you publish the
paper under an open access license. But, again, I am not a lawyer.

I would explicitly mention that the figure (and possibly the vignette) is released under a CC-BY (or any alternative) to be on the safe side. If I had more time on my hands, I would probably add a CC-BY statement in each of my vignettes.
