You can use "<<-" and can also use assign. You could also use
environments to pass information around since they do not get copied.
options(error=expression(.rollItBack(dbParams$con)))
dbParams <- new.env(parent=NULL)
dbParams[["user"]] <- "jo"
dbParams[["url"]] <- "blah"
doSomething(dbparams, query)
