ETH Foundations of Data Science (ETH-FDS) announces the annual Stiefel Lecture.

The Stiefel Lecture 2022 will be given by Professor Roman Vershynin, University of California, Irvine, on May 5, 2022, ETH Zurich, HG F 30 at 17:15.

Titel: Synthetic data and its privacy

Abstract: An emerging way to protect data privacy is to replace true data by synthetic data whenever possible. Medical records of artificial patients, for example, could retain meaningful statistical information while preserving privacy of the true patients. But is it possible to make synthetic data that is both private and useful? Is it possible, in particular, to deploy statistical sampling privately? These and other questions about privacy inspire new problems in high-dimendional probability theory about random walks, covariance estimation, and private measures. The talk is based on a research program that is joint with March Boedihardjo and Thomas Strohmer.

The Stiefel Lecture has been created in honor of Eduard Stiefel (1909-1978) who was professor of mathematics at ETH Zürich. Stiefel has been the driving force for establishing "electronic scientific computing" with ERMETH (Elektronische Rechenmaschine der ETH). This became a landmark in computational and mathematical sciences with a huge impact to a broad range of applications in engineering and natural science. Stiefel has made fundamental and lasting contributions in mathematics, including the introduction of the Stiefel-Whitney classes, the Stiefel manifold and the conjugate gradient method. Stiefel advised 63 PhD students, many of whom became leaders in their field.

The talk will be followed by an apero.

We cordially invite you to attend the Stiefel Lecture.

Looking forward to meeting you at this special event.

With kind regards,

Peter Bühlmann
Director
