UNIVERSITY OF BERN
(INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS AND ACTUARIAL SCIENCE)

PhD POSITION in PROBABILITY THEORY

Funding from the SNF (Swiss National Science Foundation) is available
for a PhD student to work on the joint Croatian-Swiss
project `Probabilistic and analytical aspects of generalised regular
variation' awarded to Prof. Ilya Molchanov (Bern) and Prof. Bojan Basrak (Zagreb).

The project focuses on regularly varying functions and extreme values. The advertised position will concern properties of regularly varying functions with values in abstract spaces. The advertised PhD position will be supervised by Ilya Molchanov and placed at the University of Bern. The position will be funded by SNF for the first 2 years, and then by the University of Bern for the 3rd year with a possibility to extend up to the total of 4 years.

Interactions with other members of the team (based in Croatia) will be encouraged. It is anticipated that the prospective PhD student has a background in mathematics with emphasis on probability theory. Good knowledge in geometry, general topology and functional analysis will be valuable.

The salary will be at the level foreseen by the SNF, see
http://www.snf.ch/SiteCollectionDocuments/allg_doktorierende_d.pdf.

There is a possibility to complement the salary by taking up teaching
and statistical consulting duties in the department. The starting date
is February 2020 or as can be arranged by a mutual agreement.

Applications (cover letter, CV, transcripts from the studies and e-mail address of an academic referee) as a single pdf file and a copy of the master thesis
should be e-mailed to

Prof. Ilya Molchanov
ilya.molchanov using stat.unibe.ch

Deadline: 15/December 2019. E-mail enquiries are welcome.
