The Role of Statistics in International Organizations (Special focus on the World Trade Organization)

Adelina Mendoza & Jurgen Richtering - World Trade Organization - Geneva

ABSTRACT:
The World Trade Organization (WTO) is an intergovernmental organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations in order to facilitate trade. It is a forum for governments to negotiate trade agreements as well as a place for them to settle trade disputes. To take informed decisions and create a level playing field, transparency on members' trade policies is a prerequisite which is enshrined in a framework of members' notifications on trade policy matters. This is complemented by regular monitoring and reporting by the WTO Secretariat. Statistical information (detailed data and summary indicators) related to economic and trade policy issues are essential for the WTO Secretariat and its members to fulfil its mandate. The Statistics Group in the Economic Research and Statistics Division plays an important role as the custodian for market access intelligence data which includes tariff and non-tariff measures, merchandise and services trade, and trade in value added. Statisticians are thus expected to have the expertise to handle efficiently very large sets of detailed data and be able to extract, summarize and synthesize relevant statistical information to cater to the very diverse demands and evolving needs of the organization and its member states. The presentation will provide an insight into the types of data that WTO statisticians typically deal with and the tools they use for processing, analyzing and disseminating information.
