Dear Colleagues,

we cordially invite you to contribute to and/or participate in the 2nd
Workshop of the AG LifeSciences within the Swiss Statistical Society
(SSS). It takes place directly prior to the Spring Seminar of the SSS
Section Education & Research which starts at 14:00
- see http://www.stat.unibe.ch/content/talks/sstats/spring2009/.

The GROUP "LifeSciences" within SSS serves as a networking instrument
between applied statisticians and practitioners and scientists in the
Life Sciences interested in applied statistics.

At the MEETING, each participant will shortly introduce her-/himself.
Thereafter, three open statistical problems from the Life Sciences are
presented (about 15 min), and discussed in plenum (about 20 min).
On the one hand, this is a good opportunity for practitioners and
scientists in the Life Sciences to get feedback and professional
consulting on their data analyses. On the other hand, it presents
problems and needs concerning applied statistics to the statisticians.
This workshop promises synergistic gains for both sides.

At the last workshop in April 2008, our three speakers were
Bettina Almasi (Swiss Ornithological Institute, Sempach), a
PhD-student in Biology, Dominik Heinzmann (Institute of
Mathematics, Zurich), a PhD student in Biostatistics, and
Franziska Schöni (MEM Research Centre, Bern), a medical
scientist. The three talks initiated fruitful discussions on
the interpretation and application of mixed models,
epidemiological models and on spline regessions in the
particular cases of the speakers studies.
In the coming workshop, we would like to focus again on
statistical APPLICATIONS in Life Sciences rather than on
statistical or mathematical theory.
A short abstract of the three contributions will be sent to all
participants beforehand.

Best wishes
Fränzi Korner-Nievergelt and Barbara Hellriegel
