       Exploring Brain Imaging

Nicholas Lange, Harvard University Schools of Medicine

***********************************************************
Together we will explore modern brain imaging technology
and its applications in two biostatistical case studies. Results from
the on-going longitudinal NIH MRI Study of Normal Brain Development
in the United States introduce some basic ideas and uses of in vivo
structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain tissue anatomy
and diffusion tensor imaging of brain circuitry. Results from a
comparative study of changes in single gene expression due to anti-
psychotic treatment administration, via an animal model, introduce
some basic ideas and uses of brightfield microscopy. Additional
examples of brain imaging modalities and their applications will be
introduced as time allows. Initial familiarity with basic imaging
concepts is not required.
