A PhD position at IDSIA (Lugano, Switzerland) is open for applications.

The position is concerned with developing theory and algorithms for
credal networks. Credal networks extend Bayesian nets to deal with
imprecisely specified probabilities, and can be regarded as sets of
Bayesian networks. Credal networks are used for robust inference in
knowledge-based systems as well as in data mining and statistics.

The position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The
initial appointment will be for 3 years, with possible prolongation.
The goal is to finish the PhD thesis within 3-4 years. The new PhD
student will be supervised by Marco Zaffalon, will join the IDSIA
group on imprecise probability, currently made of 5 postdocs, and will
be involved in international research collaborations.

The salary is roughly 38,000 Swiss Francs per year (~= 33,000 USD ~=
25,500 EUR), low taxes. There is travel funding in case of papers
accepted at conferences. The official language at IDSIA is English.

The deadline for applications is 20 March 2009.
