Well, Doug Bates is currently enjoying a real vacation, so
hopefully will not see this for a few days...

Short answer:  hatTrace() used smart C code that was using the
      "old" parametrization of "mer" objects,
      and it has not yet been implemented for the new 
      (0.999375-* and newer) one.

Longer answer: Wait for Doug's return from vacations.
