[R-SIG-Mac] Grids not showing

Avi Gross has been helping me with ggplot lattice plots.  When he sends me graphs he has created (on a windows computer I think), if I view those on my iPad I can see a vague grid in the background on each panel.  I would like to have that effect in the graphs I produce.  However, when I view his graphs on my iMac, or if I use his code to produce a graph on my iMac, the grids disappear.  How can I get the grids to show in the graphs I produce?
