Follow instructions in the MacOSX FAQ, section 7(!).

(The "9" in the warning is a relic from an older FAQ document.)

If you need further guidance open up Terminal.app and tell us what is your equivalent of

Peters-iMac:R pd$ locale
LANG=
LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL="en_US.UTF-8"

(i.e. just enter "locale" at the prompt)

-pd
