[R-SIG-Mac] Screen device under macOS X

Are you on Lion? (You failed to mention that crucial detail)
If so, R cannot detect window session on Lion (the OS says there is none even if there is one) so it must assume that you are using ssh or other tunneling, so if falls back to whatever other device it can use.
