AFAICS you failed to clean up before this run.  Try with a clean set 
of sources (and perhaps build from a tarball).  There is rgeos.so (and 
probably *.o) in your src directory.

You can easily compile your own GEOS. I did so (multiarch) a few 
months ago when rgeos was said to be imminent for CRAN.
