[R-SIG-Mac] Eclipse/StatET under OS X

Dear r-sig-mac list members,

I've been trying to get the Eclipse IDE with the StatET plug-in to
work on my MacBook under OS X 10.5.2. I've been generally successful
-- e.g., I can run R within Eclipse, can edit and submit code, and can
check, build, and install packages -- but I have run into some problems:

(1) help.search() fails to open a browser and reports the following
message:

Making links in per-session dir ... If '/usr/bin/open' is already
running, it is *not* restarted, and you
     must switch to its window.
Otherwise, be patient ...
Warning messages:
1: In file.create(f.tg) :
   cannot create file '/var/folders/QR/QRtg9biYGR4019m9g6dBwU+++TI/-
Tmp-//RtmpxgPeEP/.R/doc/html/packages.html', reason 'No such file or
directory'
2: In make.packages.html() : cannot create HTML package index

(2) help() sometimes works and sometimes apparently does nothing. When
it works, it reports a warning:

 > help(lm)
Help for 'lm' is shown in browser /usr/bin/open ...
Use
	help("lm", htmlhelp = FALSE)
or
	options(htmlhelp = FALSE)
to revert.
Warning message:
In .show_help_on_topic_as_HTML(file, topic) :
   Using non-linked HTML file: hyperlinks may be incorrect

(3) Commands that normally open windows, such as help(package="car"),
don't appear to do anything.

I've tried inquiring about these problems on the StatET email list,
but the developers don't use Macs. I thought that someone on the r-sig-
mac list might have experience with getting Eclipse/StatET to work. I
have some experience with it under Windows and am very impressed. It
would be nice to have a fully functional installation under OS X as
well.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

John
