[R-SIG-Mac] different behavior in pdf than quartz

Hi,

I like to call pdf directly when I have to save a large number of plots.

To have french accented vowels and a degree sign in an axis label, I 
can use the tip given to me on this list:

Sys.putenv(LANG = "C")

However this only fixes accents in quartz graphics. PDF graphics seem 
to be immune. Is there a known cure?
