The R installer package at http://gifi.stat.ucla.edu/pub differs
from the official one, because

-- It does not have X11 support, but allows you to use
quartz graphics from the terminal or from Emacs/ESS.

- It includes binary versions of 460 R packages.

-- It's R-devel, not R-patched.

-- It uses the Aqua version of Tcl/Tk.

-- It includes g77 and the Carbon version of Emacs (with
    ESS).

If you are an R.app person, it is better to use the official
version (with X11 based Tcl/Tk). If you have CLI or Emacs
bias, and cannot stand the X11 ugliness, then this may be
the way to go.

The same site also has a version of R-devel with X11 support
and X11 Tcl/Tk (with the same 460 packages). Install
either one, but do not install both.
