This is without an extra optimizations. We compare a dual
1.25Ghz G4
with a dual 2.0 Ghz G5. Both run R-1.8.0beta and OS X 10.3B74.
The
G4 has 2GB of RAM, the G5 has only 512MB (at the moment).

sink("timings.lis")
hilbert<-function(n) 1/(outer(seq(n),seq(n),"+")-1)
print("hilbert n=500")
print(system.time(eigen(hilbert(500))))
print(system.time(eigen(hilbert(500))))
print(system.time(eigen(hilbert(500))))
print("hilbert n=1000")
print(system.time(eigen(hilbert(1000))))
print(system.time(eigen(hilbert(1000))))
print(system.time(eigen(hilbert(1000))))
print("sort n=6")
print(system.time(sort(rnorm(10^6))))
print(system.time(sort(rnorm(10^6))))
print(system.time(sort(rnorm(10^6))))
print("sort n=7")
print(system.time(sort(rnorm(10^7))))
print(system.time(sort(rnorm(10^7))))
print(system.time(sort(rnorm(10^7))))

Average time for these 4 tasks

          G4 G5
H500 1.2 0.55
H1000 8.0 4.0
S6 2.1 1.2
S7 26.4 14.3
