We have more or less established this as an ATLAS problem. Jeff
Whittaker, who maintains the fink version of R-base and R-extended,
will post R-1.4.0 fink packages with and without ATLAS soon on
fink.
For many reasons (the dylibs being one, the updating mechanism
being another) I would advise anybody on this list who wants to use
R on OSX/Darwin using X11 or gnome to install
1: The Apple Developer Tools (free)
2: Fink (free)
Once you have done that, you can easily install R from fink and
then build your own variations (using gnome, using f77 and not f2c,
using ATLAS or the build-in BLAS). All the necessary tools, given
the December version of the Developer Tools, are available
through fink (including Xfree86). And of course fink also gives
you gnuplot, grace, octave, scilab, yorick, clisp, guile, librep,
emacs (both X11 and Aqua), xemacs, xfig, xv, the gimp, guppi,
gnome, gnumeric, mozilla, python, numerous perl modules,
ncftp, many window managers, all of tetex. It has close to 700
packages by now.
