In case people are interested in this:

OS X comes with emacs 20.7.1, which runs in the terminal window (or
in an xterm, if you are so inclined. The emacs you get from Apple does
not have X11 support compiled in.

Fink has emacs 20.7 with X11 support, emacs 21.1 with its
Cocoa wrapper Emacs.app, and xemacs-21.4.3.

I am not sure if all these emacses live together happily, but I do know
that 21.1 Cocoa and 20.7.1 Terminal now both accept M-x R and
allow you to run R and edit R files from their respective windows.

If you want graphics windows, you can have them by running 20.7 X11
or 20.7 Terminal in an Xterm, or Xemacs. I will try some other combos,
maybe.

Of course I do not know if all the other inferior packages that can run
as inferior processes using ESS also work.
