Title:  Research Associate

Functional Title:  Research Educator



Position Summary/Purpose of Position:  The First-Year Innovation & Research Experience (FIRE) is a new major initiative at the University of Maryland, College Park. FIRE provides first-year undergraduate students research experience, broad mentorship and social connectivity that impacts academic success and professional development.



The Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President in collaboration with the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (AREC) of the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources is seeking a Research Associate to serve as the Research Educator for the FIRE Achieving Resource, Environment & Energy Sustainability innovation and research stream. The stream Research Educator works in collaboration with the stream-affiliated faculty members (Dr. Lars Olson, Dr. Anna Alberini and Dr. Sebastien Houde) to design and implement the group research agenda and is responsible for all curriculum, instruction and broad student mentorship. The Research Educator will coordinate with a team of undergraduate peer mentors to oversee research operations including student research progress, laboratory maintenance as well as management of the fiscal budget. The position empowers the individual to develop a strong portfolio of experience in curriculum development, instruction, mentorship, leadership and research group management.



The Achieving Resource, Environment and Energy Sustainability stream has three focus areas: analysis of natural science and socioeconomic data on biological resources; renewable energy systems, vehicle ownership and use by Maryland households; interventions to encourage households and small businesses in Maryland to invest in cost-effective, energy-saving technologies. The stream will be housed in a new AREC undergraduate research center.



Minimum Qualifications:  Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics, Computer Science (Data Analysis and Visualization), Economics, Geography (Geographic Information Systems), Statistics, or a related field.

Expertise working with statistical software and large data sets.



Preferences:  Expertise in data visualization, econometrics, geographic information systems, statistics and/or survey administration. Demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate education.



Additional Information:  The Research Educator position will be supported from January 2015 through December 2017 (3 years) contingent on positive annual reviews (each December 2015 & 2016). The position co-reports to the Director of First-Year Research Programs in the Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President as well the stream affiliated faculty members Dr. Lars Olson, Dr. Anna Alberini and Dr. Sebastien Houde.
