[R-gui] SIMPLE GUI

I am pretty new to R and much of the discussion in this group is way
over my head. I am a researcher not a statistician or programmer.
 
I wonder if you guys could help though, I currently use SPSS, but would
like to consider R.
 
Is there a simple GUI that has most of the basic functions available?
 
How convertible is SPSS syntax to R?
 
What is the best way to make a custom GUI for R, which would run certain
syntaxes (e.g., calc the mean of variable X) from a drop down menu
interface.
