I think "emerging consensus" is a bit strong here. In particular given
the fact that nobody actually wrote anything for R that uses wx...

Gtk is another contender (but someone seems to have offended the guy
who did the Mac port and nothing has happened with it in 2004). Or
even Tcl if we could get the graphics device issues ironed out (or did
we already do that? How portable is the tkrplot stuff?).

For my part it is a major issue how the internal programmability (i.e.
writing GUI elements in R) pans out. I still haven't seen anything
that matches Tcl/Tk in that respect.
