Dear Jaime,

I have some experience with R on Linux. I have used both openSUSE
and Fedora and have been very pleased with the ease of use,
installation, and performance of R on both. The only thing I have
struggled with is finding a good text editor that behaves somewhat
like Notepad++ and NPPtoR on Windows. I've tried several, including
Kate and gEdit, and I ended up liking Kate best mostly (I think) for
it's simple and effective way of sending commands to an integrated
console. RKWard was nice, but a bit buggy when I used it a year
ago, especially with regard to viewing graphics.

In my somewhat limited experience with these distros, I didn't find
much to recommend one over the other, but there is a whole world of
arguments about distros on the web. I would mostly pick one based
on how many people you can find to help you out -- this may be a
strong argument for Ubuntu which seems to have a large user base.
Or you can pick one based on your favorite color. Now that I'm
using Fedora, I sort of miss the green of openSUSE.

One general comment: I highly recommend installing the Linux distro
in VirtualBox if you are just testing it out. I've had very good
performance with this, and if you end up not liking a particular
distro, you can just throw away the file you installed it in.

My $0.02 for what it's worth.

Hi all.
I am thinking in start using Linux slowly while I stop using Windows. I
would like to know if there is a special distribution of Linux recomendend
for the use of R and GRASS, or in general if there is a better distribution
of linux than the others, honestly I just have heard about Ubuntu.
Aditionally I would like to know if someone has a negative experience in the
migration from Windows to Linuxm and if there are some tips for complete
succesfully this process.
Thanks for your answers. My best regards.
