Thanks very much for reporting back, and for indicating a resolution for 
others in the same situation. I believe that those running the CRAN OSX 
rgdal binary are protected because it ships with the metadata files.

A release candidate for PROJ 4.9.2 was issues yesterday evening, and will 
provide a solution to the problem, but because other issues also need 
addressing, it may be a little while before it is out, and propagates to 
MacPorts, etc.
