[R-sig-Geo] Number of polygons between 2 points

Dear all,

I have a large layer of many spatial polygons (several thousands): class 
SpatialPolygons.

I have another layer of spatial points (several tenths): class 
SpatialPoints.

I would like to count the number of these polygons crossed by a straight 
line joining each pair of points.

Any hint?
