Also, the book "Applied Spatial Data Analysis with R" is a good reference.
I think you should clarify your question in terms of a varying weight matrix
(W) over space or a varying autocorrelation coefficient (lambda) over
space. Your term "scale" seems a little loose, but seems to point to the a
varying W structure over space.
