Hi Erin,

While not strictly R-sig-geo related, here are few pointers.

I think Nathan (Yau, the author) is trying to introduce a variety of 
tools and languages suitable for people with different objectives and 
backgrounds. R seems to be his favourite tool for many tasks, so there 
is quite a lot of code in R there as well. You can download much of the 
source code here:

Learning Python is still a good idea!
