[R-sig-Geo] Cluster (Group) Layers of a RasterBrick

Hi,

I have a RasterBrick with multiple Layers (appr. 50). Some
of the layers are correlated as they show similar patterns (although
maybe in different scales).
Now I'd like to do a cluster analysis or similar to arrange my layers
into groups of similar information. I thought about sampling the
rasterbrick at each cell (or randomly at 1000 cells) and then I take
the information of each layer as characteristic of each sampling site.
Then I could do an ordinary cluster analysis like it is done for other
datasets.
Or is there a simpler way to do that e.g with the "raster"-package.
Has anybody recommendations on that?
