[R-sig-Geo] find raster cells with non-NA values

I would like to 1) find which cell numbers in a raster have non-NA values so
that I can 2) use extract to calculate the variance within a radius of each
of these cell centers.  I think I have figured out part 2, but am having
trouble with part 1.
