Hi,

Did you read http://cran.r-project.org/doc/manuals/R-data.html ?
Have a look at the rgdal package for many supported grid formats.
For MATLAB, start with cran.r-project.org/doc/contrib/Hiebeler-matlabR.pdf , R.matlab package.
Also, http://www.rseek.org can be helpful.
