Please try the pre-release version 0.8-2 from R-forge:
https://r-forge.r-project.org/R/?group_id=943
or:
install.packages("maptools", repos="http://R-Forge.R-project.org")
which should work with the latest GSHHS files.

Do the same errors occur with readOGR() in rgdal? I have not downloaded
the GSHHS shapefiles, but will if you cannot check.
Best wishes,
