convert the first to SpatialPointsDataFrame, and create a SpatialPixels
object from the second, then use overlay() to get the indexes of the
points that lie within the 10km grid cells.

first create a SpatialPixelsDataFrame, say sx, then use
as(sx, "SpatialPolygonsDataFrame")
