[R-sig-Geo] writeOGR issue in dbf

I think the problem is an illegal variable name "dist.m"
This works for me:
data(meuse)
coordinates(meuse)=~x+y
names(meuse)[12] = 'distm'
writeOGR(meuse,".","test",driver="ESRI Shapefile")
