[R-sig-Geo] Large Lidar Data Set fill 1m gap

I used GRASS with the inverse distance weighted algorithm to make DEMs
@ 1m resolution (I have a 5GB xyz text file also). There ~40
individual DEMs with a 1m gap in between them. I would like to fill
this 1m gap and then patch all of the DEMs together. r.fill.nulls in
GRASS will throws an error that I believe is due to memory limitation.
Any hints or leads would be greatly appreciated.

System Inoformation:
Linux Ubuntu 10.04
R 2.11.1
GRASS 6.4svn (a couple of days ago)

kindest regards,
