Excellent report, thanks very much! This kind of feedback really helps 
push development forward!

Please try the most recent R beta for Windows 64-bit version. It may be 
that the methods issue has been resolved there. If the problem persists, 
please post on R-devel, where your report will reach the people with most 
experience on internal issues.

With regard to spdep, if spam is the only problem, I can change it to 
suggested and condition on it for those needing method="spam" in model 
fitting until it becomes available.
