Include sessionInfo() output to report the version you are using, please. 
This wrapper for write*Shape() functions was introduced in June 2008, so 
"new" isn't the word I'd use. The current version of maptools is 0.7-26.
Using update.packages() frequently does ensure that you pick up bug fixes 
and package enhancements as they are released.
