[R-sig-Geo] 2D interpolation

I am looking for a function that interpolate data points z in the x,y- 
plane.
For the one-dimensional case this would be a "natural cubic spline".  
Is there
a package where I find a function for "natural thin plate splines" for  
interpolation?

I found in the akima package the function interp. But this is not a  
thin plate spline interpolation.
