[R-sig-Geo] Appending to ascii grid

Hi all,

In write.asciigrid ... will pass arguments to write.table. I tried to 
append data (i.e. append=TRUE) and this didn't seem to have the desired 
effect. Is it possible to do this?

If not, does anybody have a suggestion for building a large raster (any 
format) from subsets of data?
