[R-sig-Geo] GDAL Error - .grd not recognised as a supported file

Thanks for the comments -
GDALinfo(input_file)
comes back with the same
Error in .local(.Object, ...) :
GDAL Error 4: `C:/Users/Darren/Documents/ecology and
conservation/SP/data_gis/RASTEr/ETOPO1_Ice_g_gdal.grd' not recognised as
a supported file format.
Does this mean it's not possible to open with packages available in R?
If so I'll try the geotiff and work with a subsample .........
