Dear R-sig-geo,

I have just finished with updating the second edition of my lecture notes
that I have used over years for the GEOSTAT summer schools for PhD
students.

A copy of the working draft can be obtained here:

http://spatial-analyst.net/book/

I would like to invite you to read selected chapters (and review the
attached R scripts) and then post comments via the editorial system
(please read the "instructions for reviewers" first!). As a reward for
your effort, I plan to send some 80 free copies to the most active
reviewers (based on the web traffic), so please also make sure you enter a
correct mailing address.

FYI all datasets used in this book have been put on-line:

http://spatial-analyst.net/worldmaps/

I sincerely plan to keep this publication of open access. This was a
difficult decision, because open access inevitably carries a risk of lower
quality and lower confidence in what is said. Hopefully, you will also see
the benefits of open access publishing and help me improve this book by
sending me your comments and suggestions. This way it will reach some
minimum quality standards that will make us both happy.

cheers,

T. Hengl
