[R-sig-Geo] historical descriptions for mapping function in R

Hi there,

Please someone tell me about the initial release date of maptools and
friends' packages, history about these packages, or related references for
citation.  I am writing about a review of mapping function in R for
Japanese readers.  

maptools(changes = T) showed only after 0.4-2.

It is somewhat easy to review the status quo, but hard to find out
historical descriptions.
