[R-sig-Geo] reading thematic data in R

Hi All,

I am modeling occurrence of forest fires in a
landscape.  I am planning to apply logistic
regressions.  I have a number of thematic layers, how
do I import the data into R.  I am exploring rgdal,
somehow the .tar.gz does not install properly.
