One of the commercial database you might want to check out is http://www.globalfinancialdata.com/index.php3. They have data going back to 1800 in case of US stock market and also commodity market

Gabor ,you may get traction by consulting a list that is in the FAQ
section of Wilmott forums.  (www.wilmott.com).  There were several
free sources listed there to my memory, but I don't remember if there
was a source for broad asset classes.
