Any chance that you have the NVIDIA driver in play here? They monkey around with libGL.

EXACTLY!!! I use the NVidia drivers from their site, and that is exactly what happened. I reinstalled mesa-libGL.x86_64 and that resolved the issue (though not sure if that broke anything else on the workstation that relies on the NVidia drivers)
