[R-sig-eco] What does vegan's protest() actually report?

Hello Mailing List,
On vegan's help page (?protest), it states that protest() reports m_{12}.

However, in Legendre & Legendre Numerical Ecology (2012), p612, it
reads "protest() of vegan uses TraceW instead of m_{12}^2".

Obviously TraceW != m_{12}^2, so I am confused.
Are they referring to the same statistic but using different names?
