  It is possible, but far from easy, to fit models with *crossed* random effects
in nlme: this is discussed at <http://glmm.wikidot.com/faq> (search
for "nested or crossed?"

  Further questions on mixed models might be more appropriate for
r-sig-mixed-models <at> r-project.org ...
