[R-sig-eco] Classical statistics in R

Hi,
I have yet to see a book that was a good introduction to statistics. I
have always felt
that before going into anything about inference, discussion should
center on what is
an experimental unit, and what is an observational unit. Then
incorporate notions of
likelihood, and probability. S&R and Zar, etc. are counter productive in
teaching
about how to think about statistics. I consult daily with biologists,
and for the most
part I find there are grave misunderstandings about what statistics is
for. Confounding
is rampant. Variability is misunderstood, ie the variability of an
estimate vs technical error.
and so on. In ecology survey sampling is extremely important, but tends
to be under emphasized.
I would say connection to R, or other software is the least of the
problem.

Nicholas
